About the Penny Black:
On May 1, 1840 Great Britain issued the world’s first adhesive postage stamp nicknamed the Penny Black. The unperforated stamp featured the image of Queen Victoria and was issued for use on May 6th. The Penny Black was issued for just over one year and was switched to the Penny Red due to the difficulty of seeing the cancellations.
